Successful QCL Research Computing & HPC Informational Session

On Friday, May 8, the Murty Sunak Quantitative and Computing Lab (QCL) hosted a successful informational session on advanced computational resources for teaching and research. The session brought together students, faculty, and staff from across the Claremont Colleges community who are interested in expanding their use of research computing and high-performance computing (HPC) tools.
The event served as an introduction to the growing ecosystem of computational resources available through QCL and regional and national partnerships, highlighting how these tools can support a wide range of academic disciplines.
Overview of QCL Research Computing Services
Participants were introduced to QCL’s research computing support services, including assistance with:
- Programming and software development support
- Data analysis and visualization workflows
- Scientific computing and reproducible research practices
- Machine learning and data-intensive computing projects
The session emphasized how QCL can support researchers at all stages, from early project design to scaling computational workflows.
High-Performance Computing Resources
A major focus of the session was access to high-performance computing infrastructure available to the Claremont Colleges community. Topics included:
Laguna Regional HPC Cluster
Attendees learned about the Laguna regional HPC cluster, including how it supports scalable computing for research workloads and enables users to run computationally intensive jobs more efficiently.
ACCESS National Supercomputing Resources
The session also introduced the ACCESS program, which provides researchers with access to national supercomputing systems. Participants learned how allocation requests work and how these resources can be used to support advanced research computing needs.
GPU and Advanced Computing Resources
The workshop highlighted GPU-enabled computing options and how these resources can accelerate workflows in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and large-scale data processing.
Getting Started and Support Pathways
The session concluded with an overview of how users can get started with QCL computing resources. This included information on onboarding support, training opportunities, and how to connect with QCL staff for consultation and technical assistance.
Participants were encouraged to take advantage of upcoming workshops and continued support offerings designed to strengthen computational skills across the Claremont Colleges.
